VDE - Nemecké združenie pre elektrotechnické, elektronické a informačné technológie bolo založené už v roku 1893. Zasadzuje sa o moderné vzdelávanie odborníkov a vysokú akceptáciu techniky u obyvateľstva. Podporuje rozvoj elektrotechniky, elektroniky a informačných technológií a ich súvisiacich technológií.
Hlavným ťažiskom činnosti združenia je bezpečnosť v elektrotechnike, vypracovanie uznávaných pravidiel techniky ako národné a medzinárodné normy, skúšky a certifikácia prístrojov a systémov.
Americká varianta noriem VDE je označovaná ako UL norma (Underwriters Laboratories).
