The International Union of Railways (UIC) develops and distributes International Railway Solutions (IRS) to help railway stakeholders, to achieve further harmonisation and collaboration.

This IRS:

• - deals with the requirements for vehicles used in passenger night services offering sleeping accommodation,
• - sets out special and/or additional requirements as well as exemptions from the UIC provisions generally applicable to passenger vehicles,
• - defines the principles to be respected when distributing space and describes the modules that can be envisaged for the interior layout of passenger vehicles (e.g. compartments, toilets),
• - provides requirements to ensure a higher level of safety for passengers and accompanying staff,

- contains requirements about:

• . couchettes,
• . modules,
• . doors,
• . water and power supply,
• . air conditioning, lighting,
• . intercom arrangements and public address system.

It integrates in full or in part the following UIC leaflets:
