Following demand from the railway and freight sectors, UIC has designed a European Standard Freight Axle (ESFA). The ESFA designs and technical documentation are defined in IRS 50510-6 [1].
A suitable wheel is required for the application of the ESFA in European freight traffic. The aim of the project was to define requirements for a new internationally harmonised tread braked 25t load axle load wheel.
This report describes the requirements for a monobloc wheel and forms the basis for suitable variants to be developed.
