Prior work on the ethics of engineering digital products and services for children has led to a patchwork of proposed principles. There appears to be limited ethics education embedded within traditional digital engineering curricula, which may be one of several factors relevant to understanding the risks and harms children and adolescents encounter in digital environments. Although the right to be heard is established in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, relatively little work in this field has engaged with the perspectives of young people themselves, despite their unique insights into their own concerns, needs, and expectations. In this project, the authors worked with young people and expert stakeholders to co-create a set of informed ethical principles, which were then used to create an educational resource intended for engineers.
