Arsenic is a naturally occurring element in rocks, soils, water, sediments, and biological tissues. It is also present in fossil fuels. Arsenic in the environment has both anthropogenic and natural sources, and certain anthropogenic sources have caused localized adverse effects on ecological systems and human health. Based on extensive review of the literature, this monograph is intended to serve as a reference volume on the sources of arsenic in the environment, the chemistry and fate of arsenic compounds, biomedical effects, the toxicity of arsenic to aquatic and terrestrial species, wastewater treatment options, and regulatory standards for arsenic in the environment.
